Abstract
AIM: To assess pressor effect of phenylephrine (5%) eye drops in patients with and without systemic comorbidities
METHODS: 165 patients in ophthalmology OPD were evaluated for baseline blood pressure (BP) and after pupil dilatation using tropicamide with phenylephrine (5%)eye drops by manual sphygmomanometer
RESULTS: Out of 165 patients, 83 had no comorbidities with mean systolic BP (SBP) of 121 and 122mmHg, mean diastolic BP (DBP) of 77 and 78mmHg and mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 92 and 93mmHg before and after pupil dilatation respectively. 82 had comorbidities with mean SBP of 133 and 135mmHg, mean DBP of 82 and 83mmHg and MAP of 99 and 100mmHg before and after pupil dilatation respectively. Age ranged from 18-86years with 88 females and 77 males.
CONCLUSION: Phenylephrine eye drops can be safely used for routine examination in those with comorbidities to achieve better pupil dilatation
