Abstract

Aim: Find causes of vitreous haemorrhage (VH) & compare clinical with ultrasound (USG) findings.

Material and methods: Prospective study, 17 cases with VH, duration- July 2020 to June 2021. A- & B- scan USG done in all cases. USG findings like retinal detachment (RD), retinal tear, intraocular foreign body (IOFB), posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), choroidal detachment (CD) noted. Compared with clinical findings after resorption of VH or after vitreous surgery.

Result: In 40% VH was due to diabetic retinopathy & in 36% due to trauma. In 4 cases RD was seen in USG, but originally 3 cases had RD. So the accuracy was 75%. Out of 3 patients with retinal break detected in USG, only 1 had retinal tear. So the detection of break is poor with USG (33%). Other cases without retinal involvement attained better visual acuity after resolution.

Conclusion: Ultrasonography can accurately predict the retinal detachment in vitreous haemorrhage cases, retinal tear detection & localization is poor.
