Abstract
Post-Operative Endophthalmitis (POE) following Cataract Surgery is one of the most dreaded complications. Historically, most options have been topical and subconjunctival for antibiotic prophylaxis against POE. However, the administration of intracameral antibiotics after surgery is the most direct method of antibiotic prophylaxis. Moxifloxacin has a broad spectrum coverage and thus, it was preferred both because of its commercial availability in India and because of the evidence supporting its safety when injected intracamerally. The rate of POE without intracameral Moxifloxacin was around 0.08% whereas it was just 0.02% with its use. On the other hand, a reduction in the extra cost in the form of intravitreal injections, vitreo-retinal surgeries, multiple investigations, frequent hospital visits and the loss of daily wages, would be much more than the total cost borne by the hospital in their routine IC Moxifloxacin prophylaxis offsetting the total cost involved in managing POE cases.
