Abstract
A middle-aged farmer was involved in an accidental blast that led to 30% burns on his body and face along with bilateral open globe injury. Both his eyes underwent scleral wound repair along with intravitreal and systemic antibiotics. 15 days later he was referred to our centre with a diagnosis of right eye opaque cornea with retinal detachment and multiple intraocular foreign bodies and left eye phthisis bulbi. Corneal and vitreoretinal surgeons worked together to perform temporary keratoprosthesis assisted lensectomy+vitrectomy, foreign body removal. and silicone oil tamponade along with penetrating keratoplasty. At 3 months follow-up, the patient had a clear graft, completely attached retina under silicone oil, visual acuity of 2/60 and intraocular pressure of 9mmHg. Timely intervention, Judicious preoperative planning and meticulous surgery can ensure globe salvage with restoration of ambulatory vision in select patients with severly traumatised eyes.
