Abstract

AIM To study the effect of covid-19 pandemic on presentation of cataracts and management. Method Prospective, interventional study done between August 2020 to December 2020. Patients underwent detailed ocular examination and systemic examination. RT-PCR test was mandatory. Age, sex, preoperative vision, cataract grading, anaesthesia with outcome were assessed. Results 167cataract cases of 147 patients included 67 males and 80 females. 77(46%),45(27%),28(17%),11(7%),2(1%) presented hypermature, mature , dense brown , posterior subcapsular cataracts and phacomorphic glaucoma respectively. Age group 76-85 years presented with maximum cases of 61(37%) and minimum cases of 4(2%) in age group ≤ 45 years. Corneal oedema 67(40%) was most common complication. Conclusion Delayed presentation of cataracts was seen due to covid-19 pandemic leading to increased dependency especially in elderly age group. Female was the most affected gender due to negligence of the family.
