Abstract
Aim: To evaluate effect of 0.5% intracameral pilocarpine on intraocular pressure(IOP) changes after topical phacoemulsification
Methods: Consecutive patients of cataract with Nuclear Sclerosis 2+/3+ were randomly divided into 2 groups: group 1 (50 eyes) with 0.5% intracameral pilocarpine after topical phacoemulsification & group 2 (50 eyes) without intracameral pilocarpine. IOP was recorded with non-contact tonometer in both groups at baseline & postoperatively at different intervals
Results:100 patients were recruited with 50 in each group. Significant rise in IOP was noticed in both groups at 4 hours & 8 hours postoperatively. However, IOP returned to preoperative levels within 24 hrs after surgery. Postoperatively, IOP was significantly lower at 4hrly & 8hrly intervals in Group 1 compared to Group 2.
Conclusion:Use of 0.5% intracameral pilocarpine after topical phacoemulsification significantly reduces IOP for 08 hrs postoperatively, with no significant reduction in IOP after 24hrs
