Abstract

PURPOSE: To study pattern of various ocular defects in children of 5 to 15 years age in schools of West Maharashtra. METHODS: 1558 students of age 5 to 15 years in 4 schools of West Maharashtra studied for various ocular defects in period Oct 2019 to March 2020. RESULTS: Refractory errors were detected in 162; Myopia in 92, Hypermetropia in 14, Astigmatism in 56. Unilateral hypermetropia with amblyopia was detected in 3 children below 9 years of age. 9 squint, 2 pterygium & 7 other ocular defects were detected. Corrective glasses prescribed to all children having refractory errors. Cases of amblyopia have been treated with occlusion therapy & corrective glasses. Other defects were provided suitable treatment. CONCLUSION: Early detection & correction of refractory errors in useful during study period & leads to psychological development of children as well. Unilateral hypermetropia with amblyopia can be prevented to become irreversible if properly treated before 9 years of age.
