Abstract
Methods:Prospective study of 55 eyes of 49 patients who underwent kp from 2017 to 2020 at a tertiary eye care centre in south India.Major postoperative outcomes were Best corrected visual acuity(BCVA), graft clarity and survival and associated complications.
Results: Keratoconus(KC) (49.09%) was the most common indication for kp, followed by congenital hereditary endothelial dystrophy (18.18%). 47.29% of the cases underwent optical penetrating kp and 38.18% underwent deep anterior lamellar kp.Graft survival at 1 year was 93.20% and 77.86% had excellent graft clarity.Graft failure was seen in 6.89 %,most common cause was graft infection.BCVA at 1 year greater than 20/63 could be achieved in 84.28% eyes.
Conclusion: KC was the main indication for pediatric kp ,though penetrating kp is the gold standard, lamellar kp has been an encouraging option in this study.Complications such as graft rejection and glaucoma can be managed well even in pediatric cases to ensure better graft survival.
