Abstract
AIM: To assess the comorbidity of dry eye syndrome in children with VKC METHODOLOGY: A prospective observational hospital-based study conducted over a period of 2 yrs included 102 VKC children, less than 18 yrs. Each child underwent a meticulous history taking & complete biomicroscopy evaluation including, corneal fluorescein staining, corneal sensitivity, TMH, TBUT and schirmer’s test I. Patients were labelled as dry eye if minimum 2 out of 3 diagnostic test were positive. RESULT: Patients age ranged from 3 -18 yrs (mean age, 9.03 years; 71.6% M; 28.4% F). The prevalence of dry eye in children with VKC was 41.17%(42 of 102; 28 M& 14 F). Commonest presenting symptom & signs were itching(90.2%) and Papillae(82.35%) respectively, ocular surface damage was predominantly SPKs(57.6%).Reduced corneal sensation found in 10.78% ,showed high association of dry eye(p<0.0001).TBUT was found <10s in 51.96%, TMH was <0.1mm in 35.29% and schirmer’s <10mm in 8.82%.
