Abstract
Purpose: To study the presence of perilimbal pigmentation in cases of vernal keratoconjunctivitis and its correlation with the severity and duration of disease.
Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted at a tertiary eye-care-centre from March 2019 to February 2020. 152 cases of VKC were identified. Presence and extent of perilimbal conjunctival pigmentation were recorded and analysed. The relation of extent of pigmentation with severity and duration of the disease was also analysed. Results: Notably, the characteristic perilimbal pigmentation was noted in 81 cases (p<0.0001), of which only 15 cases had pigmentation in all the four quadrants (p=0.0033). The extent of pigmentation corelated significantly with the severity of disease (p-value<0.0001). However, it did not correlate with the duration of disease (p-value=0.0794). Conclusion: The perilimbal pigmentation appears to be an early clinical finding in patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis when signs and symptoms are subtle.
