Abstract
Keratoconus is an ectatic disorder of the cornea. The sensitivity towards identifying and diagnosing keratoconus has increased in recent times amongst ophthalmologists. However, the general population remains largely unaware. Most of the patients present to ophthalmology clinics at advanced stages of the disease. We conducted a survey-based study including 328 eyes of 164 patients diagnosed as keratoconus for the first time. Their corneal tomography was analyzed. The subjects were provided with a proforma and questionnaire and were required to answer a set of questions in order to define the sequence of events leading to the diagnosis and the impact of the disease on the quality of life.
CONCLUSION: Keratoconus prevalence is increasing amongst the young and severely affects the quality of life. Improving awareness of the general public, ensuring timely referral by optometrists, and keeping a high index of suspicion is emphasized.
