Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a common complication of diabetic retinopathy and the leading cause for visual impairment. Purpose is to characterize morphological and functional changes of centre-involving DME under anti-VEGF therapy with Ranibizumab .
METHODS: A consecutive series of 32 eyes with centre-involving DME were included. Treatment consist of monthly applied intravitreal injections with 0.5 mg Ranibizumab. All data before and after three intravitreal injections were collected.
RESULTS: Mean best-corrected ETDRS visual acuity was 25.85 ± 13.83 letters before treatment and increased significantly (p< 0.001) by 5.15 ±6.45 letters to 32.00 ± 13.31 letters. Baseline central retinal thickness (CRT) was 514 ± 122 µm and decreased significantly (p<0.001) to 372 ± 112 µm. CONCLUSION: ONL cysts and their size as morphological parameters correlated with retinal function measured with BCVA before and over course of anti-VEGF therapy with Ranibizumab in patients with DME.
