Abstract
AIMS:To determine the dry eye status and association between dry eyes and retinopathy in patients with type II diabetes.
MATERIALS & METHODS: A cross-sectional study where 100patients with type II diabetes were enrolled. The dry eye status was evaluated using Ocular surface disease index symptom score(OSDI), Tearfilm break-up time measurement and the ocular surface staining score. The severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR) were determined by fundus examination and graded according to ETDRS criteria.
RESULTS: 62% had significant dry eye. OSDI symptom score shows significant dry eye in diabetic patients with retinopathy. Significant association was found between dry eye and duration of DM and positive association between the dry eye and the severity of DR was found.
CONCLUSION: Dry eye and diabetic retinopathy share a common association in Diabetes. Dry eye is more frequent in patients with longer duration of diabetes and in patients with DR.
