Abstract
PURPOSE
To find the association between serum lipid values & Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness with the severity of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR)
METHODS
A prospective observational study was done in the age group of 40-65years who had been diagnosed with diabetes for more than 5years & were referred for retina evaluation. The patients were divided into 3 groups- mild, moderate & severe NPDR. RNFL thickness was measured using Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT) and the lipid values were measured in the fasting state
RESULTS
The study population included 126 patients. RNFL thinning corresponded to the progression of NPDR with more thinning found in severe NPDR than the mild NPDR. Additionally, deranged lipid values and poor diabetic control had no interdependence with either the RNFL thinning or progression of NPDR
CONCLUSION
Hence, early diagnosis of RNFL thinning is the paramount strategy for prevention of progression of NPDR patients
