Abstract
Purpose: To study the epidemiology, clinical features and treatment outcomes of pterygium cases undergoing surgery from 2017 to 2020.
Method: A retrospective observational study was designed from 2017 to December 2020. Total 168 patients presenting with pterygium were examined and surgical outcomes were noted.
Results: Majority of our patients were males (84.3%). 85.4% were from rural background. All of them were operated in stage 2 and 3 of pterygium. 31-40 was the most common age group affected followed by 41-50. Foreign body sensation was the commonest presenting symptom in 83.7% followed by congestion in 18.5% cases. The success rate of pterygium with conjunctival autograft transplant was reported as 85.5% in our study.
Conclusion: Pterygium patients should be operated only when it starts encroaching cornea in order to prevent vision loss and corneal opacity. Protective measures should be advised in order to prevent occurrence of pterygium.
