Abstract
INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the role of early and appropriate optical correction and occlusion in visual recovery and the impact of baseline parameters influencing prognosis. METHODS: 42 patients aged 5 to 15 years old with a vision of < 6/12 in better eye or at least a two line difference in both eyes were included over 12 months. Optical correction post cycloplegic refraction and occlusion (if required) was given. Patients were followed up at 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 weeks. Improvement in vision was correlated with age at presentation, degree of anisometropia, depth of amblyopia and residual components of binocular function. RESULT: Early and appropriate optical correction produced significant visual recovery even in moderate amblyopia with preservation of a part of binocular functions. CONCLUSION: In children with significant ametropia and anisometropia, the disadvantages of poor baseline parameters is overcome by early optical correction followed by occlusion if required.
