Abstract

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to describe type of injury, management, visual outcome of traumatic cataract during lockdown at an eastern Indian hospital. METHODS: Total 75 cases of traumatic cataract were included, from April 2020 to August 2021. Demographic data, mechanism and extent of injury, and visual outcome were analyzed. RESULTS: male to female ratio were 2.5:1. 68% were caused by sharp objects, 60% had corneal injuries, 2 patients assaulted physically, 72% had total cataract. Small incision cataract extraction done for all patients, with primary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation was performed in 64 cases. Visual acuity improved to 6/18 or better in 82.97% postoperatively. Post operatively fibrinous uveitis and glaucoma were seen as main complications. CONCLUSION: Management of traumatic cataracts during COVID lockdown was really challenging. But we have done with absolute dedication, careful surgical approach, and good post-operative management to achieve a favorable consequence.
