Abstract
Introduction:
Oxy-acetylene welding, commonly known as gas welding is commonly used in small scale industries. Acetylene is an inflammable gas produced by the reaction of calcium carbide with water
Clinical presentation:
A 19 year old boy presented following explosion of a calcium carbide welding tank. Examination revealed second degree burns involving the whole face (9%), severe pain and redness of the eyes . Visual acuity of both eyes were severely impaired. Cornea showed multiple epithelial erosions present bilaterally. The right eye had a large central epithelial effect seen on fluroscein staining. Both eyes were irrigated and topical steroid therapy with lubricants, antibiotics and cycloplegics given
Conclusion: Gas cylinder explosions can result in severe ocular injury if not properly managed. This case highlights the importance of raising public awareness on the dangers of cylinder gas explosions and safety precautions that must be enforced to prevent further such incidents
