Abstract
Aim:Prevalence of fundus lesions in anemics & hematological risk factors for retinopathy using ROC curve.Methods:Retrospective study,anemic patients on fundus exam(May 19-April 20).Retinopathy was present if haemorrhages,Roth’s spots,exudates,CWS,retinal edema and optic disc changes.Grp 1:Patients with AR; Grp 2:Patients with no AR.Demographic features,fundus findings &haematological values noted.Results:38(30%) eyes of 23 patients had AR;90(70%) eyes of 47 patients had no AR.Mean age in 1 was 54.7 ± 18.9 & 2 was 58.6 ± 15.3 years.AR grp had low Hb[mean = 7.82 ± 1.64 gm/dl] & hematocrit[mean = 26.93 ± 5.22 %].AUC values for Hb (0.737) & hematocrit (0.719) were higher for AR grp.Hb < 8.95g/dl could predict AR with 85.8% sensitivity, 68.9% specificity.Hematocrit < 30.5% could predict AR with 80% sensitivity & 53.2% specificity.Regression analysis showed Hb(p<0.001) & hematocrit(p=0.000) a/w AR. Conclusion:Retinopathy is seen in severe anaemics.Low anemics should undergo a retinal exam.
