Abstract
AIM To evaluate the efficacy of topical dorzolamide in management of cystoid macular edema (CME) in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). MATERIALS AND METHODS It was a prospective study where 20 patients with RP having CME were evaluated. Visual acuity and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were done. Foveal thickness was also measured by OCT. The patients were given topical dorzolamide twice daily for 1 month. Follow-ups were done at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after starting treatment. RESULT 14 patients (70%) showed decrease in retinal thickness within 1 month. 19 (95%) patients had complete resolution of CME within 6 months. No severe side-effects were seen in the patients in study. 1 (5%) patient who initially showed improvement in macular edema later worsened with continuing treatment. CONCLUSION The results showed that topical dorzolamide is effective for the treatment of CME in patients with RP.
