Abstract

AIM: To compare efficacy and safety of intraoperative intracameral mydriatic agent with preoperative topical mydriatrics in patients during Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS).

METHOD: This prospective, interventional study was conducted on 72 patients visiting tertiary hospital from July 2020 to June 2021; 2 groups were made with 36 in each; Group A were given preoperative topical mydriatics and group B intracameral mydriatrics intraoperatively. Pupil size was measured at start of MSICS and after intracameral injection, before IOL implantation and at end of surgery. Postoperative Visual acuity, corneal edema, AC inflammation were assessed.

RESULTS: Mean pupil sizes in both groups before, during and after surgery were similar(p>0.05). Post operatively no significant difference was seen in corneal edema, AC inflammation and visual acuity in both groups.

Conclusion: Intraoperative intracameral mydriatics are safe and effective in MSICS without prior preoperative dilatation.
