Abstract
This retrospective study analysed records of drivers (3042; mean age 47.0 ± 5.7 years) who presented for annual ocular check‑up.
Visual function‑threatening systemic diseases were present in 25%, out of which DM (18.7%) was most common. Most common ocular problem was refractive error (45%). Visual function‑threatening ocular diseases were present in 9.5% . DR, visually‑significant cataract, glaucoma and CSCR were noted in
4%, 1.9%, 1.7% and 0.8%. Surgical intervention was required in 2.2%. 13 drivers were temporarily deemed unfit for driving heavy‑weight vehicles.
Several bus drivers suffer from vision‑threatening systemic and ocular diseases. Some require surgical intervention to retain fitness. A complete ocular & systemic evaluation of diseases with vision‑threatening potential should be performed at time of renewal of driving license. They should be educated about systemic
diseases which can affect driving skills & must be encouraged to seek medical help at early stage
