Abstract
Purpose- To compare the safety and efficacy of supratarsal injection of triamcinolone versus autologous serum in recalcitrant VKC(vernal kerato-conjunctivits)
Design-a prospective, non-randomized study
Methodology: This is a prospective, non-randomized study carried out for 18months in 40 patients of either sex and any age suffering from recalcitrant vernal keratoconjunctivitis. Previous medications were discontinued for a period of 15 days before commencing autologous serum or triamcinolone injection. 0.5 ml of triamcinolone was injected in 20 patients and 0.1 ml of autologous serum was injected in 20 patients in each eye supratarsally. Injection was repeated every fortnightly for 8 weeks
Results- significant efficacy was noted in group which received autologous serum
Conclusion- Autologous serum in recalcitrant vernal kerato-conjunctivits can be used as a safe alternative to Triamcinolone with less side effects.
