Abstract
Aim-to evaluate the outcome of simultaneous & sequential patching in unilateral amblyopia
Method-102 children with unilateral amblyopia (VA- 20/40-20/200), age 3-12 years were evaluated prospectively. Visual acuity (VA), Interocular difference & stereopsis were measured. Patients (51 in each group) were grouped as simultaneous treatment (concurrent glasses & patching at first visit)or sequential treatment (glasses alone at first visit followed by patching at subsequent visit)
Result-Mean VA improved similarly between both the groups. Patients without stereopsis at 1st visit had better stereopsis with sequential treatment compared to simultaneous treatment (p ≤ 0.05)
Conclusion-VA improved approximately 4 lines regardless of treatment type. For children without stereopsis at first presentation, sequential patching yielded better stereopsis outcome proving that the uninterrupted spectacle correction helps to stimulate binocular fusion, fostering binocularity& an appreciation of stereopsis
