Abstract
We conducted a prospective study on 867 preterm infants in a tertiary care centre in South India over 3 years, and studied the role of sepsis and surgeries during NICU stay towards progression in ROP. 142 babies developed ROP and classified as type 1(37.3%), type 2(47.2%) or mild ROP(15.5%) based on ETROP. 21 babies developing type 1 ROP had sepsis and this difference was statistically different from the other 2 groups (p=0.0004). The most common organism in type 1 ROP babies was Klebsiella pneumonia (17.1%), whereas in type 2 babies was Staphylococcus epidermidis (20%). 16 babies developing type 1 ROP also underwent a stormy period due to surgeries during their NICU stay, with a statistical significant difference compared to the other groups (p=0.002). Most common surgeries undergone were herniotomy surgeries under general anesthesia. The purpose of our study is to monitor such babies more frequently, as it is seen the progression towards severe ROP under these conditions.
