Abstract

In our study we aimed to identify the various factors affecting the time spent in each step of phacoemulsification and analyzing if they have a bearing on the immediate post-operative visual outcome. 31 surgeries by beginner and 45 surgeries by expert surgeons were included. Visual acuity was better in surgeries performed by beginners with a borderline significance (p= 0.8), due to small sample size. All the steps performed by expert surgeon (Rhexis, nuclear phacoemulsification, cortical aspiration, IOL insertion time) were lower in expert surgeon group. The factors which were significantly contributed to the difference were the number of times instruments were exchanged, the amount of time spent without only surgical activity and the number of times viscoelastic agent was injected in the eye. Our study highlights the importance of these steps in training, which is usually neglected.
