Abstract
Aim: To describe the presence of ocular abnormalities in children with developmental delay. Method: Cross sectional study. Children between 1 & 18 years, diagnosed as developmental delay by paediatrician, were included. Birth history and neuroimaging findings were noted. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) for near & distance, cycloplegic refraction, ocular examination were carried out. Ocular problems, delayed visual maturation (DVM) & cortical visual impairment (CVI) were diagnosed. Data was analysed statistically. Results: Mean age of 94 children: 4.97 ± 3.84 years. 70 children-BCVA <6/60; 83 children had ocular problems. Main abnormal neuroimaging finding-gliotic changes. Refractive error-70, strabismus-39, cataract-5 children; Amblyopia-17, DVM-13, CVI-11 children. We advised glasses & vision stimulation in 39 & 65 children respectively. Conclusion: 88.3% children had ocular abnormalities, commonest was refractive error; early intervention can help in an overall development.
