Abstract
PURPOSE: To describe the role of topical cyclosporine A 1% and tacrolimus 0.03% in patients with symptomatic Adenoviral corneal subepithelial infiltrates that were resistant to tapering dose of corticosteroid eye drops. METHOD: This is a prospective case study of 26 patients with viral subepithelial infiltrates who had been treated previously with topical steroids. The patients were divided into two groups. Group A 12pts(19eyes) were treated with CsA 1% for 2 months and Group B 14pts(21 eyes) were treated with tacrolimus ointment 0.03% along with CsA 1% for 2 months. RESULT: Group A showed statistically significant improvement in BCVA to 0.12 ± 0.07 (p=0.002),CSI score – 0.23 ± 0.53 (p=0.002), IOP – 16.86 ± 2.76 mmHg (p<0.001).Group B patients had 98% cure rate with combined treatment, compared to 63% in group A. CONCLUSION: Combination of Topical tacrolimus 0.03% and CsA 1% is a safe and effective alternative treatment in patients with steroid resistant viral subepithelial infiltrates.
