Abstract

This study had 93 patients in group A(60)-patients with diseases of the posterior segment of the eye and group B(33)- healthy controls.

Exclusion criteria:Systemic inflammatory disease, autoimmune disease, laser photocoagulation, intraocular surgery, steroids or vitamin D intake.

Blood plasma was collected for IL-6 and vit D estimation with ELISA kits.

Group A had patients with diabetic retinopathy(38.89%), retinal vein occlusion(19.44%), age-related macular degeneration(16.67%), uveitis(13.89%) and Eales disease(11.11%).

Plasma vitamin D was significantly lower in A than B (p<0.001). Plasma IL-6 was significantly higher in A than B (p=0.017). It was negatively correlated with vit D (ρ = – 0.225; p=0.064). Vit D has known anti-inflammatory. These diseases show an increase in IL-6, indicating an inflammatory mechanism. Moreover,lower Vit D levels were associated with higher levels of IL-6. Thus, vitamin D may play a role in reducing this inflammatory burden.
