Abstract
Aim:To compare pain, anxiety&IOP control in trabeculectomy, phacotrabeculectomy with topical Vs subtenon anaesthesia.Methodology:Prospective study of 180Pts undergoingtrabeculectomy&phacotrabeculectomy randomized to group1-received topical(n=90)&group2-received subtenon(n=90)anaesthesia.Pain & anxiety were assessed on Visual AnalogueScale during surgery &1hour postoperatively.Results:86Pts in grp1&83in grp2 had no anxiety prior toblock(p=0.536).There was no anxiety after block in 81(90%)Pts
in grp1 &78(87%) in grp2(p=0.813).There was no pain during Sxin 68(76%)Pts of grp1& 58(64.4%) in grp2(p=0.220) but 1 hourafter Sx, mild pain reported in 73(81%)pts in grp1 & 67(74%) ingrp2(p=0.587).IOP reduced from PreOP 21.28(12.4) to12.60(4.0)mmHg at 3 months(p<0.001) in grp1 whereas in grp2IOP reduced from 18.22(6.6) to 13.26(6.1)mmHg(p<0.001) but no intergroup difference noted(p=0.392).Conclusion:Topical anaesthesia can be considered as better alternative in Trab & phacotrab surgeries.
