Abstract
PURPOSE: Evaluation of Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) as an adjuvant in surface healing of eye and orbit. METHODS: 14 patients were recruited for the reconstruction of eyes and orbit mainly for repair of socket contraction(SC), non -healing lid fistula, wide conjunctival granuloma and lid cicatrix. Following the reconstruction, PRF was incorporated as a layered surface adjuvant to the bare wound. The wound assessment was made 4 weeks’ post-surgery utilizing Wound Evaluation Scale (WES). RESULTS: At 4 weeks, post-surgery, 12 patients had a score of 6 and 2 patients a score of 4 as per WES. 8 patients of dermis fat graft used for repair of SC showed a WES of 6 at the end of 3.5 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: PRF possesses a three-dimensional structural scaffold capable of sustained release of growth factors and mesenchymal stem cells. This study reveals that PRF would provide a prudent physiological fibrin reservoir for cytokine enmeshment and cellular migration that can expedite wound healing.
