Abstract
Twenty five patients were operated by the hang-back technique (Group 1), and twenty five by the conventional recession technique (Group 2), by the same operating surgeon. Corneal topography was performed using the corneal topographer(Shipp Nippon, CT 1000) preoperatively and postoperatively. Data collected was analysed using paired t test. P value <0.05 was considered significant. The results of our study indicate that the hangback technique cause much more visually significant astigmatic changes than the conventional horizontal rectus recession technique, at 3 months of follow up, so patients should be counselled preoperatively. Also, it may be prudent to operate at an earlier age, since there is greater reduction of degree of astigmatism as compared to surgery in older children. This can reduce the risk of amblyopia and/or even obviate the need for glasses. We also suggest the use of conventional recession surgery as the preferred technique in patients with amblyopia.
