Abstract
Frosted branch angiitis (FBA) is an immunological response to numerous antigens. We report a case of a 50 year otherwise healthy man who developed acute retinal periphlebitis mimicking FBA in an area adjacent to retained intraocular foreign body. The patient presented with dense vitreous hemorrhage after injury to the left eye with a metallic projectile. Ultrasound and CT images helped in the localization of the foreign body. Cataractous lens was removed and during pars plana vitrectomy an area of FBA like vasculitis was noted adjacent to the foreign body. Barrage laser was done prior to removing the IOFB via the scleral tunnel and intraocular lens was placed in the sulcus. The removal of IOFB with continued use of systemic and topical steroids post-surgery, resulted in complete resolution of the periphlebitis and improvement in vision in a week. FBA is an immunological response to numerous antigens. We suspect an association of retained metallic IOFB with the development of focal FBA.
