Abstract
Purpose:To compare the activity of Aldose Reductase(AR) and Glutathione(GSH) in senile cataract nucleus of diabetics and non-diabetics.
Methods:An observational Study was carried out at a tertiary care hospital on the patients admitted for cataract surgery. Pateints were divided into two groups, diabetics and non-diabetics, each group having 31 patients. Nucleus extracted from small incision cataract surgery was sent for AR and GSH activity analysis. HbA1c values were measured for all patients.
Result:Of the 62 patients studied, mean AR activity in the diabetics was 2.07 Mu/mg protein and non diabetics was 0.22 Mu/mg protein (p value<.001). Mean GSH activity in diabetics was 3.37mMol/g and non diabetics was 7.47 mMol/g(p value<.001). Mean HbA1c of patients in the diabetics was 7.339 % and Non diabetics was 5.700(p value<.001)%. Conclusions:Diabetic patients have more AR activity and low GSH activity in senile cataract nucleus as compared to the non diabetic patients.
