Abstract
Purpose- To determine association between Age Related Macular degeneration (AMD) and serum C Reactive Protein (CRP) level.
Method- A prospective study was done on 100 patients who were diagnosed with AMD in the Ophthalmology Out Patient Department. 100 age matched healthy persons formed the control group. A 3 ml sample of venous blood was collected to determine CRP levels in both groups.
Results- The mean CRP level in the AMD and control group was 2.93±0.98 mg/L and 2.42±0.89 mg/L respectively (p=.002).
Among 100 patients, 41 had early, 36 had intermediate and 23 had advanced stage of AMD. The mean serum CRP level was 2.06±0.47 mg/L, 3.10±0.38 mg/L and 3.90±0.43 mg/L for early, intermediate, and advance AMD respectively. The difference of mean CRP level among the three groups was found to be statistically significant (p=.0001).
Conclusion- Our results suggest, elevated CRP levels may be a risk factor for AMD. Level of serum CRP is also positively correlated with the stage of AMD.
