Abstract
Along with the sight threatening DR, DM also causes anterior segment disorders like dry eye disease, corneal erosion, persistent epithelial defects and corneal ulcer.
We have conducted a study to correlate DR, glycemic control and duration of DM with dry eye disease. The different parameters of dry eye disease included were symptoms, meniscus height, TBUT, ocular surface staining, Schirmer’s test and MGD.
250 DM patients were included with 50% of the patients with no DR and the other half with DR, including both NPDR and PDR.
Disabling symptoms and instant TBUT were seen in 61% of PDR and 16% of NPDR patients. Meniscus height was decreased in 89% of PDR and 45% of NPDR patients. Marked staining was seen in 76% of PDR and 21% of NPDR patients. Reduced Schirmer’s was seen in 96% of PDR and 81% of NPDR patients. MGD was seen in 94% in PDR and 60% of NPDR patients.
A statistically significant positive correlation was observed in this study.
