Abstract
22 year old female presented with history of headache and vomiting for past 1 month, H/O PCOD on oral contraceptives and patient herself took offlabeled Vitamin A supplementation daily for PCOD. Ocular examination revealed normal visual acuity 6/6 and bilateral optic disc edema. Contrast enhanced MRI showed no intracranial space occupying lesion and lumbar puncture showed raised CSF opening pressure. Patient asked to stop oral contraceptive and vitamin A supplementation & started T.Acetazolamide 750 MG daily for one month. There was no improvement in symptoms and signs. On further investigation found to have severe anemic(Hb: 3.7g/dl) & was given 2 units of packed red blood cells followed by intravenous iron therapy for three days followed by oral iron therapy to improve anemia(Hb : 7.8g/dl) after 1 month. Speculative as to whether iron deficiency anemia is a direct cause for optic disc oedema. Treatment of the systemic condition leads to faster recovery in this case.
