Abstract
Purpose- To evaluate incidence and risk factors of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in a tertiary care centre.
Methods: Retrospective study where preterm infants with birth weight <1750 g and gestation <34 weeks were screened for ROP from January 2017 to May 2021. Infants with birth weight >1750 g and gestation >34 weeks were screened if risk factors present. Baseline characteristics, risk factors and findings of ROP were analysed using SPSS software.
Results: 72 out of 467 babies screened had ROP. There were 305 males and 162 females. 299 and 168 born out of LSCS and NVD respectively. Mean gestational age and birth weight was 32.2 weeks and 1.54 kg respectively. Prevalence of ROP was 50%, 34.7%, 9.7%, 2.8% and 2.8% in stage 1, 2, 3, preplus and plus respectively. Common risk factors are respiratory distress syndrome and unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia.
Conclusion: Meticulous screening, follow up and knowledge is important in preventing blindness due to ROP.
