Abstract
Purpose- To present the clinical course of four children with high myopia and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD). Methods- Data was collected for four children operated for RD with high myopia. Results- All children had total RD, causative break superiorly in two, temporal to macula in one and macular hole in the last. Age at surgery ranged from 10 months to 6 years, with one female. Pars-plana vitrectomy with silicon oil endotamponade was done. The number of surgeries ranged from 2 to 4, with attached retina post oil removal in two, under oil in one and phthisis in the last. All had no perception of light in involved eye. Fellow eye had refractive error ranging from -8 to -16D, atrophic macula and poor visual acuity. Conclusion- Very high myopia is rare in children and is associated with poor vision. Retinal detachment in such cases requires multiple surgeries, and visual outcome can be dismal even with anatomical reattachment.
