Abstract
Purpose-To assess different approaches in management of Aphakia in Indian ophthalmologists via an online survey.
Methods-Online questionnaire was fielded to Indian ophthalmologists recording their practice setting, experience & preferred surgical options to aphakia.
Results-Of the 481,369 were AS surgeons. Most saw <10 aphakic patients per month(89%) of which postoperative aphakia was commonest(73%).2/3rd participants reported managing aphakia themselves with a 3-piece IOL in sulcus when available and SFIOL followed by retrofixated iris claw IOL in poor capsular support. In PCR during surgery,3-piece IOL in sulcus was preferred(57%) or a retrofixated iris claw IOL in eyes without capsular support. With associated nucleus drop,85% referred to VR surgeon, who were likely to prefer SFIOL(p<0.001) and surgeons with >10 years’ experience were also more likely to prefer SFIOL(p=0.02).
Conclusion-Choice of IOL differs between AS and VR surgeons and also influenced by surgeon’s experience.
