Abstract
Canalicular laceration in eyelid trauma is commonest injury of lacrimal system. Repair done within 48 hours reduces risk of scarring and epiphora. While silicon stents are most effective, they are costly and subject to availability. This study aims to demonstrate and evaluate repairing canalicular tear economically using a 24G IV cannula. Method – Lower canaliculus was repaired using IV cannula of 24G along with lid injuries in 10 patients presenting to emergency. The functional and anatomical success of the procedure was evaluated during a 3 month follow-up. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics. Result – Out of 1 female and 9 male patients, right eye was involved in 7 and left in 3. Road Traffic Accident was the commonest mode of injury. Functional success seen in 6 cases, anatomical success in all with little complications. Conclusion – This method is safe for primary canalicular tear repair, always available in government hospitals with no burden to low-income patients.
