Abstract
Purpose: To analyze the spectrum and evaluate the clinical outcomes after firecracker injuries
Methods: A retrospective analysis of 150 patients with firecracker related ocular injuries during festive season.
Results: Male to female ratio was 4:1. Open globe injuries were commonly seen in 75% (n=112). As per BETTS classification, Zone I injury was seen in 26%(n=39), Zone II in 63% (n=95), Zone III in 11% (n=16). Associated lid injuries were seen in 25% (n=38). All the cases were operated within 2 days of injury. 40% cases were just in the vicinity and not directly involved with fire crackers. Good visual outcome was seen in 20% (n=30), fair outcome in 70% (n=105), poor outcome in 15% (n=23) cases. Enucleation was required in 5 patients secondary to severe pthisis (3%).
Conclusion: Fire cracker related ocular injuries are a major cause of blindness during the festive season. Early intervention can aid in better visual prognosis especially in Zone I cases.
