Abstract
Background: Patients suffering with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are always prone to develop a range of ocular problems in which patient’s uremic status and hemodialysis play a crucial role.
Material and Methods: it was a 12-month, prospective, observational study on 71 patients referred from dialysis unit.
Results: The most frequent ocular complaints in ESRD patients consist of redness, irritation, itching, grittiness and feeling of dryness followed by decreased visual acuity and pain in eyes. On examination of anterior segment, cataract, blink reflex abnormalities, as well as decreased tear breakup times followed by early band shaped keratopathy and corneal edema were the most observed finding. On evaluating posterior segment, macular edema and retinal hemorrhage were the most frequent encountered findings followed by retinal detachment and optic neuropathy in few patients.
Conclusions: Timely detection of these abnormalities to prevent irreversible loss of vision.
