Abstract
PURPOSE: To report a case of pathological myopia showing bilateral macular atrophy in a middle aged female patient.
METHOD: Observational case report.
RESULTS: A 35-year-old female presented with history of vision impairment in BE since childhood. History of wearing spectacles since 20 years for distant vision. Her best corrected visual acuity in BE 20/200. On slitlamp examination anterior segment was normal. Fundus evaluation showed macular atrophy in BE. Patient diagnosed as central bilateral macular atrophy in pathological myopia. FFA, OCT, Keratometry, Axial length, B scan, cycloplegic refraction and full field ERG done.
CONCLUSION: various posterior segment changes are seen in pathological myopia due to progressive elongation of the eyeball at the posterior pole. Macular atrophy usually occurs at the outer retinal layers due to abnormal elongation of the globe. To differentiate this atrophy due to elongation or macular dystrophy family screening done and found to be insignificant.
