Abstract
Background: Ocular trauma is a significant cause of monocular blindness. The present study intends to assess the profile of ocular trauma in and North Karnataka.
Methods: A total of 100 patients attending casualty and outpatient department with a history of both mechanical and non-mechanical trauma were included. All cases underwent detailed ocular examination of the anterior and posterior segment.
Results: Road traffic accidents were the commonest 57.81%, followed by trauma while cutting wood at 15.63%. Most of the trauma occurred at rural highway 47.06% followed by home 23.53% and while working in field 17.65%. Of 64 cases, 95.31% were mechanical trauma, 3.13% were thermal, and 1.56% were chemical trauma.
Conclusion: Ocular trauma sustained during Road traffic accidents is a common cause of ocular morbidity in this region. Early intervention and proper care at the tertiary care center can prevent blindness in many cases.
