Abstract
Ultraviolet irradiation is an environmental hazard that may cause inflammatory reactions in ocular tissues, especially the cornea. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, UV lamps are used routinely in hospitals to disinfect operating rooms and various instruments. Numerous studies have shown that the cornea absorbs 100 % of the UV light. However, excessive exposure can cause sloughing of the epithelium. We report two cases of UV exposure from a germicidal UV lamp in two healthcare workers who work in the operating room presenting with sudden onset of severe pain in both the eyes. On examination, there were multiple epithelial defects which improved with tear substitutes and antibiotic eye drops. Though it is essential to use germicidal lamps in view of the COVID-19 situation, it is imperative to be aware of and cautious around these lamps.
