Abstract
Hypoplasia of the optic nerve is a nonprogressive congenital disease in which there is a reduction in the number of nerve fibers projecting from ganglion cells in the retina to the lateral geniculate body, resulting in small, pale
optic discs. This is a rare case of 1.5-year-old baby born of full-term normal delivery with small optic disc on routine checkup. Optic nerve hypoplasia is associated with various gestational and environmental conditions, particularly primiparity, prematurity, young maternal age, gestational diabetes mellitus and substance abuse. Its can be unilateral or bilateral. Bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia is associated with variety of cerebral malformation commonest being septo-optic-dysplasia. Cerebral malformations can also be found in association with endocrine abnormalities. Fundus examination shows small pale grayish-white optic disc with relatively larger appearing vasculature, thinned retinal nerve fiber layer, double ring sign and tortuous retinal vessels.
