Abstract

Purpose:To study the ocular manifestations of thalassemia major in children and to correlate with the number of blood transfusions and serum ferritin levels.Methodology:Cross sectional study of 140 children with thalassemia major in the age group 2-14 years from July 2019-july 2021.Ocular evaluation including visual acuity,color vision,Slit lamp examination,direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy and shirmer’s test were done.The findings were correlated with number of transfusions and ferritin levels.Results:Among 140 children eye involvement was found in 54% as reduced visual acuity32%,lens opacity 28%,dry eye 36% and fundus changes12%. Increased number of transfusions and high ferritin levels are significant risk factors for eye involvement.64% never had an eye examination before.Conclusion:More than 50% of patients with thalassemia major has ocular involvement but majority are neglected.Hence a detailed ocular evaluation is required to improve the quality of life in these children.
