Abstract

Phaco-emulsification is a science as well as an art. One needs to understand the principles of the machine at the outset; then to maximize the utility-potential, one would have to be a trained swift footed thinker to be able to make the correct moves and to optimize the settings of the machine while tuning in to the infinite situations possible in a real-life surgical situation.

We start with an overview of the phacodynamics with differentiation enabling insights into features specific to the higher end machines compared to conventional phaco-emulsifiers.

We introduce a template on a Microsoft Office Excel Spreadsheet for enabling surgeons to maximize efficacy and safety by recording the parameters and planning other options based on assessment of outcome in a systematic manner.
