Abstract
Aim: To study impact of video counselling over verbal counselling on the patient’s decision making to choose type of cataract surgery and IOL.
Methods: Patients undergoing cataract surgery for first time included in this study. Randomised into 2 groups ‘video counselling’ and ‘verbal counselling’. At the end of counselling their knowledge about cataract surgery/IOL types and their satisfaction in decision making were interviewed.
Results: Amomg 209 patients,majority of the participants in video counselling chose femto(20.8% vs 8.3%), high-end aspherical lens(62.4%vs22.2%),multifocal types(67.3%vs16.7%)compared to those in verbal counselling.Knowledge and satisfaction level in both groups comparable with no statistical significant difference.
Conclusions: Video counselling can be considered as an effective mode for imparting clear knowledge on cataract surgery. It assist patients to make an informed decision about surgery thus improving the overall satisfaction.
